Group Therapy

Spring/Summer 2010

We are currently offering the following groups:

Mindfulness:

This group is open to adolescents and adults. Mindfulness is a meditative method that leads to a deep sense of inner peace and calm by cultivating our ability for non-judgmental awareness of the present moment. It is a powerful tool for overcoming negative thoughts, emotions, and repetitive behaviors. Attending to the richness of our experiences by being mindfully aware promotes optimal well-being in our relationships with others as well as with oneself. Members will learn to engage in the present moment and understand the liberating reality of impermanence to relieve distress and suffering. This group is limited to 8-10 members.

Parenting:

This is a support group designed to aid parents in the difficulties of raising children with OCD and other anxiety disorders. Parents will gain a better understanding of their child’s functioning within the debilitating condition. The goal is to equip parents with effective coping strategies that will promote more quality interactions with their child. This group is limited to 6-8 parents/couples.

OCD Relapse Prevention:

This group is for post-recovering patients who strive to maintain goals gained during therapy. This group is useful either as an adjunct to therapy or for children who have completed treatment and seek supplemental support. Participants will learn to identify specific situations that may trigger symptoms, and prepare for possible setbacks. The goal is to educate members about the vicious cycle of OCD and develop strategies to maintain the gains already made. There are currently 2 groups: one for children ages 9-13 and one for adolescents ages 14 to 18. Each group is limited to 4-6 members.

Dental Phobia:

This is a short-term treatment group to help adolescents and adults reduce dental fears to easily manageable levels. Participants will come to understand where these fears come from and learn how to gradually confront and overcome them. Using the latest evidence-based techniques, you’ll also discover how to avoid relapses and maintain your progress. This group is limited to 6-8 members.
